Day 2 continued

After the castle we had a drink at a cafe near the bottom of the castle.

We then headed back to the center of town for dinner.  By the time we finished dinner it was late so we headed back to the hotel.

Resting after touring castle

Ljubljana Day 2 evening

After the city tour we decided to go to Ljubljana Castle.  We took the funicular up to the castle.

We the toured the castle.  There was 2 wedding receptions taking place so our original plan of eating dinner at the castle did not happen.  The pictures are of the castle.

Ljubljana- Day 2

We had a full day touring the city.  First was the Communist tour that lasted 2 1/2 hours.

Along with the tour we saw many sights of the city.

Pretty building

Mercedes car show

Then we took a break at a cafe in the middle of the tour.  Some of us tried Rokta.  It was the Coke that Slovenians drank because they could not import the real Coke.  It does not taste like Coke, but we were glad we tried it.

Break at the cafe

We continued the Communist tour that finished at 1pm.  We had to meet for the city tour at 3.  I’ll just give you the highlights.  We saw the lock bridge.

And the dragon bridge.

We did the same tour that we did 3 years ago and everyone seemed to have a good time.

Our group on the tour

Ljubljana

We finally made it to Ljubljana around 2:45pm.  We were surprised to find a Palm tree and tiki hut photo opp on our way to the baggage claim.

Our shuttle to the hotel was waiting for us so off we went.  We checked in and got cleaned up to go to Center City (a short walk).  There was a good festival going on.  This happens every Friday, but we chose to go a couple of blocks away and have dinner at a restaurant.  Needless to say we were all tired.

Lard and Slovenian sausage

Ham and olives

We we were exhausted by then so we decided to call it a night.  A short walk back to the hotel and we retired for the night.  We have 2 tours scheduled for tomorrow but the first one is at 10:00am so we don’t’ have to be up at the crack of dawn.

Ljubljana

Today we toured Ljubljana. We took the free tour and it was great. It was
2 1/2 hours long. The free tours we took in every city were really good. They give us a very personal perspective of the city.

After the tour we took the funicular up to the castle. Of course we had to walk up stairs to go to the top of the tower to get a panoramic view of the city. See pics.

After the castle we decided to take our afternoon break. It was chilly and cloudy so we had soup – spinach (Marsha) and mushroom (Barbara). We walked around town got a little while and it started to drizzle so we went back to the hotel. I took a pic of the pizza oven at the hotel which Is typical of this area.

We stayed in our room knitting – we bought yarn for scarfs a few towns or countries back because we knew we would be going to colder climates. Then we went downstairs for dinner Marsha had marinated baked red peppers and baked beans and I had a dish similar to yesterday. Then we had a sampler platter of desserts – baklava, chocolate mousse, panna cotta with sour cherry sauce. We definitely have eaten our way thru Slovenia.

Tomorrow we go to Croatia. I should also mention almost everyone speaks English here and the TV has American programs in English with Slovenian subtitles. At least on the rainy days we could understand the TV.
