Traveling to Rome

We got to Tampa airport and then flew to Atlanta with no problems.  While waiting for our flight to Rome the airline needed people to be bumped.  They offered a $1,300 voucher for a flight anywhere and would put us up in a hotel for the night.  The next flight to Rome would be Saturday the next day at the same time. Shirley and I thought this was too good a deal to pass up.  We told the airline and they asked us to wait until the plane was boarded and they would make our arrangements.  However I would have to let our hotel in Rome know that we would be arriving a day later.  Since it was nearing midnight in Rome I called and told them. The plane had boarded when the airline told us that several passengers had missed the flight and that we should board.  Onto the plane we went- but I had to call the hotel before we took off.  Almost panic mode, but I was able to reach them and tell them the correct date of arrival.

We arrived in Rome got our luggage and headed to the train station for our trip into the city.  At the train station we found out that the Metro and some of the buses were on strike.  Now we had to do plan B.  We took a shuttle into the city that dropped us off at our hotel.  The shuttle was only €15 per person so that was a pretty good price.  On the trip into the city traffic was a mess due to the strike.  It is chaos, not organized chaos, just chaos.  When we got to the hotel they were having a problem with the plumbing on one of the floors and had to get us a room in a sister hotel. We had to wait while the hotel tried to get a taxi for us – near impossible. The taxi finally arrived and we took our lives in our hands trying to cross the street to get to it.  Rome was a giant mess.  Finally we arrived at our hotel and checked in.  It was about 1:30pm Rome time and we are sleep deprived and tired from traveling.

Heading home

i am sitting in the Tampa airport waiting to board for my next trip so I thought I would tell you about our last day on the last trip. My memory is sketchy and we spent a lot of time on the road heading south.  Of course we had to stop at a winery.  We saw a sign for one and turned down that road.  It did not look promising.  The property was nice, but there were no cars.  We went in and Mary the woman who did the tasting told us her father owned the farm and he used to grow tobacco.  When that crop was no longer profitable they contacted several wineries in the area and converted some of the land to grapes.  The farm is100 acres and the winery is a family run business. A couple of their wines have even won awards.  It was a very interesting and enjoyable stop.  Also the wine was quite good.

We continued  south but took rural roads.  Travel was good and the scenery spectacular-the azaleas, dogwoods, tulips and annuals were all in full bloom.  Much more scenic than I-95.  The time line may be a little off but it is really just the highlights of our trip back.  When we crossed into Florida Marsha suggested we eat lunch in Fernandina Beach. Great idea!!  What a charming town.  Definitely a place to come back to.  We found a Mexican restaurant and had a pitcher of margueritas and food.

As I said we are waiting for our flight to Atlanta and then on to Rome.  Will keep you posted on our travels.

Charlottesville and Monticello

Today we toured Jefferson’s Monticello.  We spent most of the morning and early afternoon there. The grounds are vast with beautiful vegetable and flower gardens.  The tour of the mansion was also great.

After Monticello we went to the Michie Tavern for lunch.  It was late afternoon and we were all hungry.  It is a buffet but there is wait staff that keeps bring more good if you would like to try something.  There was fried and baked chicken, pulled pork, biscuits and cornbread with an assortment of vegetables.  All was delicious.

Then we were off to a craft beer bar.  We each had a flight of beer.  The beer is delicious and inexpensive.  While we were there a large group of men came in.  They are all in Charlottesville attending JAG school.  The basically were getting their Masters Degree in law.  After that bit of fun it was almost 7pm so we decided to return to the hotel for the night. We will be on the road most of tomorrow on our way home.  It was nice when we started out this morning but the day got chillier as it went into the afternoon.  I think it will be in the low 40’s tonight.

DC to Charlottesville

We left DC behind and are making our way back home.  Our next stop is Charlottesville.  On the way we stopped in Madison VA.  We now have been to 3 cities named Madison in our quest to visit all the Madisons in the country.  We stopped for breakfast.   I had eggs, fried apples, toast and scrapple at the Mountaineer Cafe.  Then we stopped at Montpelier the home of James Madison.  We didn’t tour the mansion but saw the grounds. The people on the horses were giving a demonstration on how horses were used during the Revolutionary War.  Then we went on to our hotel in Chaottesville.  Apparently there is a winery every mile in Virginia, but we are saving our wine tasting for tomorrow. We are now tucked in getting ready to tour Monticello tomorrow.
